The idea

Black develops the knight to f6 on move two, inviting White to push e5 and chase it — a provocative line that trades structure for activity.

Main line: 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.e5 Nd5 4.Nc3 Nxc3 5.dxc3 Nc6 6.Bc4 e6 7.O-O d6

What White wants

  • Push e5 to gain space while calculating the knight exchanges
  • Develop Bc4 and castle to use active pieces
  • Use the half-open d-file after ...Nxc3 dxc3

What Black wants

  • Develop quickly and challenge e5 with ...d6
  • Target the doubled c-pawns after the exchange on c3
  • Trade pieces when it relieves the cramped position

Key idea

Understand this and the moves stop needing to be memorised.

The knight can exchange structure for time

After e5 Nd5 Nc3 Nxc3 dxc3, White has doubled c-pawns on c2 and c3 and a half-open d-file. Black's knight does not have to exchange on c3, but this choice damages the structure while helping White develop. Both sides must weigh activity against pawn targets.

Common mistake

Treating Nc3 and dxc3 as forced rather than a structural choice. White can choose another setup; if the exchange occurs, develop actively and use the d-file instead of defending the doubled pawns so passively that Black's central breaks arrive unchallenged.
