The idea
White avoids all the main-line theory with 2.c3, offering a pawn centre in exchange for the open Sicilian's complexities.
Main line: 1.e4 c5 2.c3 d5 3.exd5 Qxd5 4.d4 Nf6 5.Nf3 Bg4 6.Be2 e6 7.h3 Bh5
What White wants
- Build the d4 centre with c3 and develop naturally
- Gain time on the black queen after ...Qxd5
- Keep the position simple — the Alapin is chosen to avoid theory
What Black wants
- Take on d5 with the queen and hold the extra central presence
- Develop with ...Nf6, ...e6 and ...Be7 and contest the centre
- Neutralise the pawn centre before White completes development
Key idea
Understand this and the moves stop needing to be memorised.
c3 delays the natural attack on the queen
After ...Qxd5, White cannot immediately gain time with Nc3 because the c-pawn occupies c3. White instead plays d4 and develops the kingside, then moves the c-pawn or uses other pieces to pressure the queen. The bishop on e2 does not attack d5 directly.
Common mistake
Assuming that the queen on d5 must be chased immediately. Black's ...Nc6 and ...e6 are normal developing moves; White should build d4 and complete castling before spending tempi on a queen attack that does not improve the position.
Mistake example: e6.
