The idea

Black develops both knights and the queen to natural squares before committing the pawn structure — flexible, sound, and very hard to attack.

Main line: 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nc6 5.Nc3 Qc7 6.Be3 a6 7.Be2 Nf6 8.O-O Bb4

What White wants

  • Gain space with Be2 or Bd3 and castle, then press on the kingside
  • Fight for the d5 square and the half-open d-file
  • Avoid trades that hand Black a comfortable endgame

What Black wants

  • Keep the centre flexible and choose ...d5 or ...b5 later
  • Pin with ...Bb4 and trade pieces at every opportunity
  • Play ...b5 and ...Bb7 to pressure e4 — the base of White's centre

Key idea

Understand this and the moves stop needing to be memorised.

Flexibility is the plan

By playing ...e6, ...Nc6 and ...Qc7 Black keeps the d-pawn uncommitted and can choose ...d5 or ...d6 later. White has more space but must still develop. ...a6 restricts Nb5, while ...Bb4 can pin the c3 knight and increase central pressure.

Common mistake

Allowing Nb5 without checking the queen's escape and central tactics. A knight on b5 attacks c7 and d6, but the d-pawn is still on d7 in the early Taimanov. Black uses ...a6 or accurate calculation, not defence of a nonexistent d6 pawn.

Mistake example: Bc5.
