The idea
Black captures e4 and meets White's central reply with ...d5, trading the closed Spanish structure for active pieces and an immediate central battle.
Main line: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O Nxe4 6.d4 b5 7.Bb3 d5 8.dxe5 Be6
What White wants
- Keep the advanced e5 pawn supported and challenge the e4 knight
- Trade off Black's active pieces before the endgame arrives
- Use c3 and Nbd2 to hold the centre and keep the extra space
What Black wants
- Develop actively with ...Be6 and use the central knight on e4
- Consider ...Nc5 to attack the bishop on b3 and contest central squares
- Look for ...d4 as a freeing break in the middlegame
Key idea
Understand this and the moves stop needing to be memorised.
Active pieces behind a central pawn
After dxe5 and ...Be6, Black's d5 pawn supports the knight on e4. It is not isolated: the c7 pawn can still help the centre. White has space on e5, while Black relies on piece activity and pressure against the bishop on b3.
Common mistake
Assuming the advanced e5 pawn makes Black passive. The knight on e4 and moves such as ...Nc5 create concrete threats, so White must finish development and check the bishop on b3 before making slow pawn moves.
