The idea

The classical Spanish: both sides complete development behind their pawn chains and the game becomes a slow manoeuvring battle with a tiny edge for White.

Main line: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 d6 8.c3 O-O

What White wants

  • Play d4 only when the timing is right, then aim for the d5 outpost with a knight
  • Manoeuvre the knight via f1–e3–d5 or f1–g3
  • Attack on the kingside once the queenside pawns are fixed

What Black wants

  • Reroute the c6 knight with ...Na5 and ...Nxb3 to remove the Spanish bishop
  • Hold the centre and look for the freeing ...d5 break
  • Trade into an endgame — the compact structure is very resilient

Key idea

Understand this and the moves stop needing to be memorised.

The queen's knight takes the long road

White often reroutes the b1 knight through d2 and f1 toward g3 or e3, once d4 has cleared d2 and Re1 has cleared f1. From there it supports central and kingside play. The d5 square can be useful, but Black may challenge it with ...c6.

Common mistake

Following the knight manoeuvre mechanically while ignoring Black's central breaks. Before spending tempi on Nbd2 and Nf1, check whether ...d5 or ...exd4 changes the centre and whether your e4 pawn has enough defenders.
