The idea
Black develops the f8 bishop actively to c5 before playing ...d6, accepting a slightly loose queenside for a much more dynamic position.
Main line: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O b5 6.Bb3 Bc5
What White wants
- Play c3 and d4 to hit the c5 bishop and open the centre
- Use the a4-square and the loose b5 pawn as targets
- Castle and attack before Black finishes coordinating
What Black wants
- Develop the bishop outside the chain and threaten ...Nxe4 ideas
- Complete with ...d6, ...O-O and ...Bg4
- Keep the position sharp — quiet play suits White's structure
Key idea
Understand this and the moves stop needing to be memorised.
The bishop is developed before the pawn chain closes
Putting the bishop on c5 before ...d6 means it never gets locked behind its own pawns. It costs a tempo later when White plays c3 and d4, but an active bishop beats a passive one.
Common mistake
Rushing c3 and d4 without counting the tactics. The bishop on c5 and the knight on f6 are both aimed at e4, and ...Nxe4 ideas appear the moment White's centre pawns step forward. Grabbing at b5 with a4 first is worse still — ...Bxf2+ punishes the loosened kingside.
