The idea
White offers the b-pawn to deflect the c-pawn away from the centre and grab the d4 square for free — an old-fashioned but awkward gambit.

What White wants
- Use b4 to pull the c-pawn off the c-file and take the centre
- Recapture on b4 with the a-pawn and open the a-file for the rook
- Develop with Nf3, Bb2 and d4 and use the open files
What Black wants
- Take the pawn and return it to develop quickly
- Play ...d5 to open the position while White is not yet developed
- Avoid defending the b4 pawn passively
Key idea
Understand this and the moves stop needing to be memorised.
The point is the d4 square, not the pawn
If Black takes on b4, the Sicilian's c-pawn is no longer able to fight for d4, so White can build the ideal centre with d4 and Bb2. Black's correct answer is ...d5 immediately, before that centre forms.
Common mistake
Assuming that deflecting the c-pawn prevents all central counterplay. Black can answer with ...d5, and queen exchanges may remove White's attacking chances. White must develop quickly and judge the resulting centre rather than rely on the opened a-file alone.
