The idea
White prepares d4 with c3 immediately, aiming for a big centre — but the queen sortie to a4 shows just how sharp the resulting play is.
Main line: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.c3 d5 4.Qa4 f6 5.Bb5 Ne7 6.exd5 Qxd5
What White wants
- Build the c3/d4 centre and hit the e5 pawn with Qa4
- Develop with Bc4 or Bb5 and castle quickly
- Keep the initiative — the queen is exposed on a4
What Black wants
- Strike in the centre at once with ...d5
- Defend e5 with ...f6 or ...Qd6 and gain time on the queen
- Trade pieces and use the slightly loose white centre
Key idea
Understand this and the moves stop needing to be memorised.
c3 costs a tempo and creates a target
c3 supports d4 but does nothing else, so Black can hit the centre with ...d5 while White's queen wanders to a4. The whole opening is a fight over whether White's centre is worth the time it took to build.
Common mistake
Defending e5 with ...f6 and then grabbing on d4. The black king's diagonal opens and White's Bc4, Nxe5 ideas arrive before Black has finished developing.
Mistake example: cxd4.
