The idea

White develops the bishop to b5 and Black mirrors with ...Bb4, combining Spanish-style pressure with the Four Knights' solid central setup.

Main line: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bb5 Bb4 5.O-O O-O 6.d3 Bxc3 7.bxc3 d6

What White wants

  • Decide whether to trade on c6 or keep the tension
  • Use the half-open b-file after ...Bxc3
  • Play d4 only with full preparation

What Black wants

  • Trade on c3 to damage White's pawns, conceding the bishop pair
  • Play ...d6, ...Ne7 and ...Ng6 to hold the kingside
  • Trade into a safe endgame

Key idea

Understand this and the moves stop needing to be memorised.

Doubled pawns for the bishop pair

After ...Bxc3 and bxc3 White has doubled c-pawns, the bishop pair and a half-open b-file. The c-file is not open: White still has pawns on c2 and c3. Black trades a bishop for structural targets, while White seeks active diagonals and a well-supported d4 break.

Common mistake

Pushing d4 before the pieces support it. White's only real try here is the slow build with Re1, d4 and the bishop pair after ...Bxc3, and rushing it simply leaves the doubled c-pawns as a pure weakness.
