The idea

White opens the centre immediately and recaptures with the queen, gaining space but exposing the queen to development-time harassment.

Main line: 1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.Qxd4 Nc6 4.Qe3 Nf6 5.Nc3 Bb4 6.Bd2 O-O

What White wants

  • Recapture on d4 and retreat the queen to a safe square
  • Develop with Nc3, Bd2 and O-O-O
  • Use the central space once the queen is settled

What Black wants

  • Gain time with ...Nc6 against the queen, then pressure e4 with ...Nf6 and ...Bb4
  • Complete development with a lead in tempo
  • Trade pieces and neutralise White's centre

Key idea

Understand this and the moves stop needing to be memorised.

The queen is a target, not an asset

Black gains a developing tempo with ...Nc6, which attacks the queen on d4. The black queen does not attack d4 through its own pawn on d7. After Qe3, ...Nf6 attacks e4 and ...Bb4 pressures its defender on c3, shifting the fight from queen chasing to central control.

Common mistake

Moving the queen repeatedly in search of threats while neglecting the other pieces. Once it reaches e3, White should develop and attend to e4 rather than hand Black more time by starting another queen excursion.
