The idea
White puts pawns on c4 and e4 — the bind — taking the ...d5 break away from Black and strangling the Dragon before it can breathe.
Main line: 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 g6 5.c4 Nf6 6.Nc3 d6 7.Be2 Nxd4 8.Qxd4 Bg7
What White wants
- Maintain the bind and prevent every ...d5 or ...b5 break
- Manoeuvre slowly with Be2, O-O and Bg5
- Squeeze without allowing a freeing trade of pieces
What Black wants
- Trade a knight for the d4 knight to relieve the cramp
- Play ...a5 and ...a4 to gain queenside space
- Get ...b5 or ...d5 in at any cost, even at the price of a pawn
Key idea
Understand this and the moves stop needing to be memorised.
Two pawns restrict a freeing break
White's pawns on c4 and e4 control d5 twice, making ...d5 harder to achieve. Black can still prepare that break or ...b5 with pieces and exchanges. The bind provides space, not a permanent guarantee that the bishop on g7 has no targets.
Common mistake
Assuming every exchange helps Black equally. Some trades ease the cramped defence, but others leave useful targets for White; decide which pieces maintain control of d5 and prevent ...b5 before exchanging them merely to simplify.
Mistake example: O-O.
