The idea

Black combines the Slav and the QGD — ...c6 and ...e6 together — creating a fortress that then expands on the queenside with ...b5.

Main line: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 e6 5.e3 Nbd7 6.Bd3 dxc4 7.Bxc4 b5 8.Bd3 a6

What White wants

  • Attack the centre with e4 and open lines before Black finishes
  • Use the Meran setup with e3, Bd3 and e4 to gain space
  • Punish the slow ...b5 expansion with a well-timed a4 or e4

What Black wants

  • Expand on the queenside with ...dxc4, ...b5 and ...a6
  • Develop the c8 bishop with ...Bb7 after gaining space
  • Challenge the centre with ...c5 or ...e5 when the pieces are ready

Key idea

Understand this and the moves stop needing to be memorised.

The Meran gains time against the bishop

After Bd3, ...dxc4 makes the bishop move again to recover the pawn. ...b5 then attacks that bishop and gains queenside space. The pawn on b5 also clears b7 for the c8 bishop; Black still needs development and a central break to justify the expansion.

Common mistake

Expanding on the queenside without watching White's e4 break. ...b5 before ...a6 is the standard Meran move order, not an error; Black must follow up with development and a central challenge instead of spending every tempo defending flank pawns.

Mistake example: c5.
