The idea
White castles straight into the attack and lets Black take on d4, offering a pawn for fast development against the black queen.
Main line: 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Nc6 5.Nf3 Qb6 6.Bd3 cxd4 7.cxd4 Bd7 8.O-O Nxd4 9.Nxd4 Qxd4 10.Nc3
What White wants
- Castle, sacrifice d4 and develop with Nc3 followed by Be3
- Use piece activity and threats to compensate for the pawn
- Keep the initiative before Black consolidates the extra material
What Black wants
- Accept the pawn but return it to complete development safely
- Keep the queen safe — it is the target the whole gambit is built around
- Trade pieces and win the endgame with the extra material
Key idea
Understand this and the moves stop needing to be memorised.
Development first, then pressure on the queen
After ...Nxd4 Nxd4 Qxd4, Nc3 develops the remaining knight and strengthens control of e4 and d5. It does not attack the queen on d4. Be3 can develop with a queen attack next, so Black must keep the queen safe while completing development.
Common mistake
Sacrificing d4 and then slowing down to defend the remaining pawns. Nc3 develops and Be3 can attack the queen; quiet pawn moves give Black time to coordinate the pieces and make the material advantage count.
