The idea

White builds the same quiet setup every game — d4, e3, Bd3, c3, Nbd2 — and then breaks with e4 or plays for the classic bishop sacrifice on h7.

Main line: 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.e3 e6 4.Bd3 c5 5.c3 Nc6 6.Nbd2 Bd6 7.O-O O-O

What White wants

  • Complete the setup and break with e4 at the right moment
  • Manoeuvre the knight to e5 and prepare Bxh7+ or Ne5 sacrifices
  • Keep the pieces on and attack on the kingside

What Black wants

  • Challenge d4 with ...c5 and develop ...Bd6 and ...b6
  • Use ...Nb4 to threaten the active bishop on d3
  • Contest e4 and complete development before White's attack starts

Key idea

Understand this and the moves stop needing to be memorised.

e4 is the whole point of the setup

Every Colle move — e3, Bd3, c3, Nbd2 — exists to make e4 possible with full support. Played at the right moment it opens the bishop's diagonal and the e-file; played too late the whole setup is just passive.

Common mistake

Completing the setup and then ignoring the e4 break. White's c1 bishop is restricted by e3, and e4 can release it while challenging the centre; a sequence of waiting moves lets Black organise counterplay without facing that central question.

Mistake example: b6.
