The idea

White combines the Queen's Gambit with a kingside fianchetto, aiming the bishop down the long diagonal at Black's queenside.

Main line: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 d5 4.g3 Be7 5.Bg2 O-O 6.O-O dxc4 7.Qc2 a6 8.Qxc4 b5

What White wants

  • Regain the c4 pawn and press on the long diagonal and the c-file
  • Build slowly with Nf3, Qc2 and Rd1
  • Squeeze Black's queenside without allowing ...c5 to free the game

What Black wants

  • Hold the extra pawn with ...a6 and ...b5 or give it back for development
  • Free the position with ...c5 or ...e5
  • Trade pieces and neutralise the bishop on g2

Key idea

Understand this and the moves stop needing to be memorised.

The long diagonal becomes active after exchanges

The bishop on g2 aims along the diagonal through f3, e4, d5 and c6 toward b7. The f3 knight initially blocks its line. Central exchanges can release its pressure; Black uses ...dxc4, ...a6 and ...b5 to contest the queenside while White coordinates recovery and activity.

Common mistake

Expanding with ...a6 and ...b5 without checking White's active replies. These are established Catalan moves, not automatic mistakes; Black must calculate a4 and pressure along the diagonal, rather than assume the extra queenside space makes development unnecessary.

Mistake example: Bb7.
