The idea

White supports e4 with f3, aiming for a broad pawn centre while accepting slower knight development and looser king diagonals.

Main line: 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.f3 e6 4.Nc3 Bb4 5.Bf4 Ne7

What White wants

  • Support e4 with f3 and expand with Nc3, Be3 and Qd2
  • Push e4–e5 at a moment when it gains space rather than loses a pawn
  • Attack on the kingside with g4 and h4 if Black castles short

What Black wants

  • Strike at the centre at once with ...c5 or ...dxe4
  • Use ...Bb4 to pin Nc3 and consider ...Bxc3 to damage the pawn structure
  • Challenge d4 with ...c5 before White consolidates the broad centre

Key idea

Understand this and the moves stop needing to be memorised.

f3 defends e4 but loosens the king

The pawn on f3 supports e4 but does not prevent ...dxe4: fxe4 changes the centre, and ...e5 can challenge d4. It also takes f3 away from the knight and loosens king diagonals, so White must develop before expanding further.

Common mistake

Treating f3 as permanent protection for the centre. After ...dxe4 and fxe4, Black can challenge d4 with ...e5. Calculate the new pawn tension rather than assuming the recapture leaves an untouchable pawn fortress.
