The idea
White plays f4 — the Dutch Defence with the colours reversed and an extra tempo — fighting for e5 from move one.
Main line: 1.f4 d5 2.Nf3 g6 3.e3 Bg7 4.Be2 Nf6 5.O-O O-O 6.d3 c5 7.Qe1 Nc6
What White wants
- Control e5 and build the reversed Dutch setup
- Develop with Nf3, e3, Be2 and castle short
- Attack on the kingside once the centre is settled
What Black wants
- Take the centre with ...d5 and ...e5 and challenge f4
- Play ...d4 or ...e4 to cramp the white position
- Attack the weakened white king's position
Key idea
Understand this and the moves stop needing to be memorised.
A Dutch with the colours reversed
f4 controls e5 exactly as ...f5 controls e4 in the Dutch Defence. It is a legitimate, if slightly loose, way to play for a kingside attack — and the same structural weakness around the king applies to White here.
Common mistake
Opening the centre without checking king safety and development. The example's e4 comes after both sides castle and leads to a queen exchange, not a stranded uncastled king. Before advancing, calculate the exchanges and whether Black's central pieces gain activity.
Mistake example: Qxd1.
