The temptation

8.Qxc3 is the move that springs the trap. Recapturing replaces the bishop lost on c3 and keeps White's pieces central. It looks like routine recovery of material.

Why it works

8...Qc1# uses the empty c1–e1 line. The queen controls d1 and d2; White's own bishop on f1 and pawns on e2 and f2 block the other king flights. The knight on b1 cannot capture c1 or interpose on d1. No piece can answer the check, so the queen does not need a defender on c1. The mistake is recapturing without checking how moving the queen off d2 opens the first rank.

The queen leaves the first rank undefended

Qc1 checks along c1–d1–e1. d1 and d2 are controlled by the queen; e2, f2 and f1 are occupied by White's own pieces.

How to avoid it

At move eight, use 8.Nxc3 instead of Qxc3. Earlier, 6.Nc3 develops while attacking the queen on b2; do not assume a pawn-grabbing queen has no threats.
